from imposter syndrome to investing in your craft
I think I can speak for many artists, creators and photographers when I say that our craft is not easy or for the faint of heart. Oftentimes, we compare ourselves to others. We compare our art to others. We compare our services to others. We compare our social media to others. Lastly, we compare our package prices to others.
We never think we are worth the money our clients spend. This mentality - called imposter syndrome - is a difficult way to operate a small business in North Central West Virginia, and beyond!
It has taken me years to wrap my head around the idea that my sessions are worth my time, money and creativity. My portfolio continues to grow daily. Speaking with my clients gives me so much excitement. Watching their families hit major milestones is heartwarming. I am simply growing into my own brand in the community this year. It has caused a rollercoaster of emotions since applying for my business permit.
My craft is worth the investment of new website offerings, social media campaigns, local advertising, business cards, new equipment, editing software and so much more! Years ago, I felt bad for - what I thought was - the best photos I could take. After taking a hiatus, I have had the moment to sit down and say "I love these photos and I know my client(s) did too. " I have received such touching notes about my return to the world of photography. I cannot thank each of you enough for your kind, encouraging words! Many had me in tears.
Every photographer grows more each time they turn on their camera body. There are ups and downs just like any other career path. Your portfolio may not look exactly like you want it at the moment. That's okay! I promise you will get to where you want to be with determination, grace and having fun!
If you are a photographer or creator struggling with imposter syndrome, know you are NOT alone. It is something I face every day. However, you can overcome it. You will soon see value in not only your work, but yourself.
